Outlander's Final Season: Tobias Menzies Gives the Definitive Answer on Whether He Will Be Back (Exclusive)

Good news for Jamie and Claire Fraser, but devastating news for Outlander's die-hard fans.

Tobias Menzies has confirmed to TVLine that he will not return as Frank or Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall before the eighth and final season of the Starz series.

"What am I allowed to say?" Menzies chuckled, unknowingly raising our hopes before deflating them. "It would be wonderful. [But] you will not see me.

The discovery comes as little surprise, given that both Frank, Claire's husband from her own time, and his cruel ancestor Black Jack, who tormented the Frasers in various ways for years, are both dead in the novel.

However, due to the vagaries of time travel, Black Jack appears briefly in Written in My Own Heart's Blood, the ninth book in Diana Gabaldon's novel series, on which the show is based.

Flashbacks, dreams, and visions are common, yet neither Black Jack nor his 20th-century descendent seem to experience them.

"They're going to bring it home magnificently, I'm sure," the Emmy-winner said during the interview, which was held in favor of his latest project, Apple TV+'s Manhunt.

Menzies will play Edwin Stanton, Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of War and buddy, in the upcoming limited series. Manhunt goes live on March 15.
