‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Propels Franchise Past $1B As Sequel Opens To $45M+ – Sunday AM Update

SUNDAY AM: Neither a snowfall nor negative reviews hampered Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire's $45.2 million opening weekend, thanks to a strong showing from families on Saturday.

Yesterday's revenue was $16.8 million, 5% more than Friday's/previews' $16 million. If the statistics hold up, it's the second-best start for a Ghostbusters film ever, trailing only the 2016 female ensemble of Kirsten Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon.

According to Sony, the domestic debut of the fifth Ghostbusters film pushes the franchise's total earnings beyond $1 billion. According to studio figures, the franchise's total earnings across four films were $985 million, which is more than Box Office Mojo.

Foreign revenue for Frozen Empire was $16.4 million from 7,500+ screens in 25 nations, bringing the global total to $61.6 million on a $100 million budget.

The opening is good news, as several exhibitors were worried that the film might fall into the high $30 million area based on presales, which were much lower than Kung Fu Panda 4.

However, Sony's marketing team was able to get the sequel beyond the finish line since the brand is both beloved and important to the studio.

I understand Feig and McCarthy had a push-and-pull on that film. He wanted more laughs, she wanted more action, and the result was a feathered fish in the wash.

Bringing back the sardonic magic and balls-to-the-wall of the original humor with huge comedy actors does not require a nuclear ectoplasma scientist.
