Ex-Bears QB Signs New Deal to Replace #1 Pick

Before the 2024 draft in April, the Chicago Bears will examine their quarterback situation, but they will not contemplate bringing back experienced backup Nathan Peterman.

Peterman will sign a one-year contract with the New Orleans Saints and replace former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston as Derek Carr's backup in 2024, according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football.

Underhill said he'll fight with 2023 fourth-round pick Jake Haener.

After the Bears signed veteran Brett Rypien to a one-year contract on March 13, Peterman's exit seemed certain after two seasons as No. 3 quarterback.

He played only five games in two seasons with Chicago and lost the backup spot to Trevor Siemian or undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent.

Although Peterman left, the Bears still have three quarterbacks under contract for 2024: Justin Fields, Bagent, and Rypien.

With Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator and the No. 1 pick, Fields and Bagent may not be on the 90-man roster when training camp begins.

Bagent's Bears and NFL future are intriguing. In 2023 training camp, the previously undrafted rookie from Division II Shepherd fought over Peterman and planned backup PJ Walker for the No. 2 quarterback job.
