$62M Receiver Hits Free Agent Pool After Sudden Release

Michael Gallup, formerly a budding talent in the Dallas Cowboys' receiving corps, is now in free agency after an unexpected release.

Gallup was drafted in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft and had a rollercoaster of highs and lows with the Cowboys, including a breakout 2019 season with 1,107 yards and six touchdowns.

His strong chemistry with Amari Cooper made them NFL threats at receiver. A 2021 ACL tear derailed Gallup's career despite early promise.

In an unusual decision, Dallas signed Gallup over Cooper in the summer for a five-year, $62.5 million contract.

This choice didn't work out. Cooper thrived with the Cleveland Browns, but Gallup failed to recover.

Recovery sidelined him in 2022, and a dismal 2023 season highlighted his struggles to restore his old form. Gallup will enter free agency after the Cowboys released him due to salary cap concerns.

After injury, Gallup's comeback showed how unpredictable sports rehabilitation is. The receiver's performance has fallen short of his early career triumphs despite a laudable effort to return to peak shape.

Gallup is an intriguing free agent option for teams seeking receiving depth and experience. Gallup's experience and skills might complement a well-rounded offensive scheme, even though his days as a top receiver are over.
