49ers to sign journeyman QB

New residence for Joshua Dobbs. Agent Mike McCartney said the 49ers signed the free-agent quarterback.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that Dobbs will sign a one-year, $2.25M contract. The quarterback can earn $750K in per-game roster incentives.

Twelve months have been busy for the seven-year veteran. After returning the Browns last offseason, he was traded to the Cardinals to replace Kyler Murray during the preseason.

To replace injured Kirk Cousins, Dobbs was traded to the Vikings after going 1-7 in eight starts.

In his brief time in Minnesota, the 29-year-old had ups and downs. His first two wins included a debut in which he threw two touchdowns and ran for another.

His next two starts were losses, including a Week 12 loss to the Bears where Dobbs threw four interceptions. He was benched for Nick Mullens in Week 13's win against the Raiders and didn't play again in 2023.

Dobbs finished with 2,464 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions on 62.8 percent of his passes. He rushed for 421 yards and six touchdowns.

Prior to 2023, the former fourth-round pick had only two career starts. After Sam Darnold left for Minnesota, the 49ers needed QB depth behind Brock Purdy. Beginning 2024, Dobbs and Brandon Allen may battle for San Francisco's QB2 spot.
